• Spread: 5060 cm (2024 inches)
• Flowers: The vibrant flowers of Scorpion are a deep purple-red, forming dense, tiered whorls atop sturdy stems. Blooming from midsummer to early autumn (July to September), these tubular flowers are highly attractive to pollinators. Their dramatic color makes them a focal point in any garden.
• Foliage: The lance-shaped, mid-green leaves are fragrant, releasing a minty or citrus aroma when crushed. The foliage provides an attractive backdrop for the vibrant blooms.

Growing Conditions

Monarda Scorpion thrives in sunny locations with consistently moist soil. Its adaptable nature makes it suitable for various garden settings.

• Soil: Prefers rich, well-drained soil that retains moisture. Adding organic matter such as compost improves soil quality and moisture retention.
• Water: Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid waterlogged conditions.
• Light: Full sun is ideal for optimal flowering, but the plant tolerates partial shade, particularly in warmer climates.

Hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, Scorpion is frost-tolerant and returns reliably each year.

Propagation and Care

• Division: Divide clumps every 23 years in early spring or autumn to maintain vigor and control its spread. Replant divisions in well-prepared soil.
• Seed: While propagation from seed is possible, division is the preferred method to retain the unique characteristics of the cultivar.
• Routine Care:
  • Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially in hot or dry conditions.
  • Deadhead spent flowers to encourage prolonged blooming and maintain a tidy appearance.
  • Apply mulch annually to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and improve soil fertility.
  • Cut back stems to ground level in late autumn or early spring to prepare the plant for the next growing season.

Uses

1. Ornamental: Scorpion is perfect for adding bold color and height to borders, cottage gardens, and mixed perennial beds.
2. Pollinator Gardens: The nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, making it an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly spaces.
3. Herbal Uses: The aromatic foliage can be used for teas or potpourris due to its pleasant scent.
4. Cut Flowers: The deep red blooms make excellent additions to floral arrangements, adding color and texture.

Ecological Value

• Pollinators: The tubular flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, providing an essential nectar source during the summer months.
• Deer Resistance: The aromatic foliage deters deer, making it a reliable choice in areas with browsing wildlife.

Considerations

• Powdery Mildew: Like many Monarda varieties, Scorpion may be susceptible to powdery mildew in humid or poorly ventilated conditions. To reduce the risk:
  • Plant in a well-ventilated area with good air circulation.
  • Water at the base of the plant rather than overhead.
  • Avoid overcrowding and ensure proper spacing between plants.
• Spreading Habit: Scorpion spreads via rhizomes. Regular division helps manage its growth and prevent overcrowding.
